Introduction
The seventh day of the week is the day the Creator set apart and blessed for holy use. It is the Sabbath of the Lord and was made for the good of humanity. The Sabbath is a sign of God’s people, and also shows God as a merciful God who is interested in the freedom of His people. The will of God, therefore, is to make the day a delight, a time of celebration, and a rehearsal of the wonderful future He has for man. In this study, we will be looking at how to keep the Sabbath holy and how to make it a delight.

This study was prepared in form of questions and comments, it is important to study all the scriptural references, make personal notes from them, and then read the comments that followed the question. All scriptural references are taken from the New King James Version of the Bible unless otherwise stated. The keyword or words in the reference verses are highlighted for you to have words to think and meditate upon.

To gain the knowledge God intends, asked Him to open your understanding to the scriptures you read. Remove your mind from any preconceived opinion and focus on what the scriptures say. Be like the Bereans Christians who studied the scriptures to be sure what they heard were true. Believe the Word of God, prove it and hold fast to it, because it is true.

May your heart be blessed as you study diligently.

Comment
The Hebrew word translated to sanctified in Genesis chapter 2 verse 3 is “qadash”, pronounced “law-dash”. It means to make clean, to consecrate, to dedicate, to keep holy, to purify, or to hallow. It literally means to separate something from secular, or sinful, or earthly, or common for a sacred, or holy, or heavenly purpose. If we apply this to the Sabbath as a day God sanctified, it means that God separated the Sabbath from common to holy use.

4. What is the general principle of keeping the Sabbath holy?
Read Isaiah 58:13

Comment
The general principle of keeping the Sabbath holy is refraining from doing our own pleasures (desires). It involves “not doing your usual things or pursuing your interests or speaking about them” as Complete Jewish Bible puts it. The Sabbath is God’s holy time and should be used for His glory.

Scriptural references
Isaiah‬ 58:13‬, “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words,”

5. How do we make the Sabbath a delight and keep it Holy?
Read Isaiah 58:13

Comment
The observance of the Sabbath is not about the do’s and don’ts but having the desire to please your Maker. God does not want us to obey him out of fear or compulsion, but out of love for him. The bible says if we love him, we will obey him. The following are what we are commanded to do to make the Sabbath a delight. Again, the general rule is refraining from doing your own pleasures or desires, and your attention should be focused on the Lord. Let your attitude be like that of Mary the sister Martha in Luke 10:38-42. It reads “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

I. Cease all regular work.
The Sabbath is God’s holy day and he commanded that all regular occupation, calling, or vocation should cease, therefore all business meetings should stop. The Sabbath is not a day for buying and selling, so it is not for grocery shopping. It is not the time to engage in the household laundry, cleaning, repair, petty renovation, gardening, or sporting activities. This rule applies to your household, workers, or the visitors in your house. Doing work on the Sabbath profanes it. Read Exodus 20:8-10, Deuteronomy‬ 5:12-14‬, Leviticus‬ 23:3‬, Jeremiah‬ 17:21-22‬, Nehemiah‬ 10:31‬, Nehemiah‬ 13:15-20, ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Scriptural references
Exodus‬ 20:8-10‬, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it, you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Deuteronomy‬ 5:12-14‬, “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Leviticus‬ 23:3, “Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Jeremiah‬ 17:21-22‬, “Thus says the LORD: “Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Nehemiah‬ 10:31‬, “if the peoples of the land brought wares or any grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we would not buy it from them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and we would forego the seventh year’s produce and the exacting of every debt.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
Nehemiah‬ 13:15-20‬, “In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions. Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. Then I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.”

II. Assemble with other believers to worship God
The Sabbath is a time of holy convocation. The Hebrew word translated convocation is “Miqra”, pronounced mik-raw, meaning a public meeting, rehearsal, or assembly. So, the Sabbath is the time to gather publicly to worship the God who created all things. The public assembly includes time of prayer, reading, and hearing the word of God.

And when you come to meet your maker, let it with the mind to worship Him alone, and bless Him with your substance according to how He has blessed you. Put on your best, but with modesty, knowing that you are coming before the creator of heaven and earth, the King of the universe. Avoid revealing dresses, come to His presence with dresses that will glorify Him and not pointing unnecessary attention to you and causing a distraction in the place of worship. Let your adornment be in the inside. Read Leviticus 23:3, Hebrews 10:25, H4744.

III. Create time for Personal devotion
The Sabbath a good for time for personal devotion, meditation, and study of God’s word. Take time to pray and study, ask God questions and let His Spirit lead you into the truth. Read books and listen to audio or video messages. Have a personal fellowship with your maker.

IV. Make it a Family time of fellowship
The Sabbath makes it possible for the family to come together for fellowship. So, the Sabbath should a time of family devotion. It a wonderful opportunity to teach and train your child in God’s way as He commanded. It a wonderful time to Let your child know why you keep the Sabbath and how this relates to the coming kingdom of God. A time to Teach them the commandments of God, pray with them, and bless them. It gives the children the opportunity to practice prayer, meditation, Bible reading, singing of hymns and learning new ones. Read Proverbs 22:6, Genesis 18: 18-19, Deuteronomy 6:6-9.

Scriptural references

Deuteronomy‬ 6:6-9‬, “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

V. Do good, have mercy, and set free as opportunities present.
The Sabbath is a day to do good as the Messiah demonstrated to us. The attitude is not that you are going about looking for someone to help, but as the opportunity presents itself. Let take for example, you are on your way to the Sabbath service on a snowy day, and you come across someone whose car was stuck in the snow and needed help to push the car out, or someone needing help with a flat tire, or someone needing direction to a place, or calling the police to an accident or incident you happen to first come across. Visit the sick brethren, encourage brethren facing a difficult moment and the like. Read John 9:14-16

Scriptural references

Matthew‬ 12:11-12‬, “Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

The Sabbath is a day to physically and mentally rest, therefore take time to rest. Relax, have a nap if you need to. Do not allow your mind to worry or wonder about the affairs of this life, give all your burdens to the Lord. Avoid the use of social media and unnecessary phone calls. Avoid murmuring, and clock watching.

6. What is the key to getting ready and organized for the Sabbath?
Read Exodus 16:23, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54

Comment
The main key to get organized for the Sabbath is preparing yourself ahead of time. Friday before sunset is called the preparation day and is the time to think and plan ahead before the Sabbath. Buy what you need to buy before sundown on Friday. Plan your meals ahead, get your dress ready, and make sure your vehicle in good conditions if you will be driving to the Sabbath service.

Scriptural references

Exodus‬ 16:23‬, “Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.”

7. Will God tell people to do what is not possible?
Read 1 John 5:3, Romans 7:12, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Matthew 11:30, Philippians‬ 4:13‬ ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Comment
God will never tell you to do what He knows you can’t do because He is your maker. The moment you don’t trust in your own understanding, and by faith, you go to Him for help, He will help you. The Sabbath command is a test command on whom your allegiance is, whether is to God, the Creator or to man, the created.

Conclusion
The Sabbath sanctifies those who keep it. It set apart (separate) God’s people from the rest of the world and identifies them as people who belong to the Almighty Creator of the universe. At the time God gave his commandments to Israel, they are the only nation God had revealed Himself. So, it was either Israel, God’s nation, or the Gentile nations (strangers or aliens as the scriptures put it). God choose Israel as His first-born nation to show to the Gentiles nations (whom He will call later) His ways and commandments, and that through Israel all nations of the earth will know Him. And at that time, there will be one law, including the Sabbath commandment, guiding all nations of the earth. God wants all believers to have the same mind, believe and speak same things. And obviously, from the scripture observe the same day. God is not an author of confusion. The Sabbath is a weekly shadow (rehearsal) and a reminder of what God’s plan of peace for this World that has not known true peace and rest for almost six thousand years. The millennial reign of Christ is the beginning of the seventh day of God where true peace will eventually come to the earth and continue until God eventually come to live with humans in the New heaven and earth. It is the will of God for us to practice and enter His rest. The whole counsel of God has been declared to you, and if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them, John 13:17.
