Introduction
Many believed that the weekly Sabbath is part of the Moses’ law which the Messiah (Christ) has done away with, therefore Christians are not required to observe it. But what does the Bible really teach about the subject of the Sabbath? The purpose of this study is to understand what the Scripture says through the pages of the New Testament.

This study was prepared in form of questions and comments, it is important to study all the scriptural references, make personal notes from them, and then read the comments that followed the question. All scriptural references are taken from the New King James Version of the Bible unless otherwise stated. The keyword or words in the reference verses are highlighted for you to have words to think and meditate upon.

To gain the knowledge God intends, asked Him to open your understanding to the scriptures you read. Remove your mind from any preconceived opinion and focus on what the scriptures say. Be like the Bereans Christians who studied the scriptures to be sure what they heard were true. Believe the Word of God, prove it and hold fast to it, because it is true.

May your heart be blessed as you study diligently.

The Messiah (Christ) observed the Sabbath in his days on a regular basis. He is our master and we are to walk in his footsteps. The Messiah usually show by example what wants his disciples to do as in Sabbath keeping, Lord’s supper, foot washing, baptism, praying and so on.

2.  Did the Messiah ever say the Sabbath has been done away with?

Read Matthew 5:17-19, Matthew 12:8, Mark 2:27-28, Luke 6:5

Comment
Yeshua (Jesus) in Matthew 5:17 stated that he did not come to do away with the laws but to make their teachings come true. That is, to make us understand the law and its true intention, and not to do away with them. By healing on the Sabbath, he was telling the religious leaders that the Sabbath should be a day of doing good, showing mercy, and setting people free. The encounter of the Messiah with the religious authority was not whether to keep the Sabbath, but how to keep it. He was also breaking the many man-made commandments the religious leaders have added to the observation of the Sabbath, which made it difficult for the day to be a day of delight. He also said he is the Lord of the Sabbath because God created all things through Him, and he knew the intention God had in mind for creating it. It is for the rest and delight of man and not just the Jews.

Comment
After the death of the Messiah, the disciples were still keeping the Sabbath. This is evidently clear from reference passages. After Joseph of Arimathea took the body of the Messiah to the tomb, the disciples first located the site of the tomb where He was laid, then they went to buy spices and fragrant oils and prepared it. Then they rested on the sabbath day according to the commandment, and after the Sabbath, early on the first day they took the spices and fragrant oils they had prepared to the tomb to apply it on the Messiah, but on getting there, Christ had risen. They did not break the Sabbath even when their master was dead, because they understood God’s commandment.

Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.”

Comment
The Messiah did not give any instructions to his disciples after his resurrection that the day to worship God has changed. Yeshua’s main focus after his resurrection was to encourage and strengthen his disciple. By appearing to them at different times and places, He wanted them to believe he had indeed risen from the dead as he told them. He had to appear to them again when Thomas, who doubted his resurrection, was with the other disciples because it was very important for his disciples to believe his resurrection. Reason being that, if the disciples did not believe that the Messiah had really resurrected, they will not have the boldness to preach about the risen Saviour or the resurrection from the dead (which is the foundation of Christian belief) to those who crucified Him and the Gentile nations. No wonder the first sermon of Peter after they received the Holy Spirit was telling the people that the same Messiah (Christ) they killed is alive, because he had resurrected, Act 2. Paul also mentioned that if the Messiah did not rise, then Christians are the most miserable of all men, and their faith in the Messiah is vain, I Corinthians 15. The resurrection from the dead is one of the main themes throughout the New Testament of the Bible.

Again, the major task of the Messiah after his resurrection was to strengthen and encourage his followers because they were afraid and discouraged. The disciples went into hiding thinking they will be killed as they killed their master, John 20: 19. If you read the next chapter, John 21, you will notice that the disciple has yet to really wake up to the reality of the resurrection of the Messiah and their assignment, they went fishing! Then He appeared to them again, but this time, restoring Peter, who will lead the church.

The account of the appearance of the Messiah to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus was also about removing doubts from the disciples, Luke 24: 13-35. This is also consistent with what happened in verses 36 to 49 when he appeared to his disciples to encourage them and explained to them what the scripture had written his death and resurrection.

After the Messiah had encouraged his disciples, He commanded them to go to Jerusalem to wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit, which will remind them all He had taught them, give them the power and boldness to preach and work miracles, Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4-8. He also told them to preach the gospel, make other disciples and to baptize the disciples they make, and finally to teach them all he had commanded, Matthew 28: 18-20. Again, Yeshua did not command his disciples to observe Sunday as a memorial of his resurrection. The observation of the first day was the commandment of men.

It is important at this point to mention some of the ordinances the Messiah established before he died, and in all these ordinances there is no one pointing or suggesting he changed the Sabbath command.
1. The Lord’s supper: The celebration in memorial of the death of the Messiah, done at the Passover once every year, John 13:1-15
2. Foot-washing: a symbol of humility and service to one another. It is also carried out during Passover as part of the Lord’s supper, John 13:1-5, I Timothy 5:9-10
3. Baptism: symbolize our faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Messiah. He showed us an example when he was baptized by John the Baptist, and then commanded his Apostles to baptize others who will believe in His name, Matthew 28:19-20

The death of the Messiah ratified the New Covenant, and after the ratification, nothing can be added or removed from it.

Comment
Yeshua (Jesus) told his disciples to pray that their fleeing from Jerusalem at the beginning of the great tribulation should not be on the Sabbath day. The reason being that fleeing from the tribulation on a sabbath day will make the day not a day of rest or delight. So, if the Messiah is not expecting his disciples to keep the Sabbath anymore, why will He tell them to pray that their time of flight from Jerusalem at the beginning of tribulation should not be on Sabbath day. Please meditate on these verses.

Comment
Apostle Paul was the Apostles to the Gentiles, and he preached to them on the Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week. He specifically admonished the Corinthian Christians to keep the traditions the way he delivered it to them, 1 Corinthians 11:1-2, and also to imitate him, 1 Corinthians 11:1, 4: 16. God’s intention for all Gentiles who will come to him through Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah is to worship him on the Sabbath day. Again, the Gentiles who believed in the God of Israel are the strangers within their gate of Israel, and they are expected to keep the Sabbath. So, the Sabbath is not just for the Jews, but for humanity – Jews and Gentiles.

The Sabbath command is a perpetual (everlasting, unending, continuous) covenant to be kept forever. It was kept during the time of the Messiah. It is expected to be kept before the Messiah returns, and will be kept during the Millennial reign of the Messiah and in the New Heaven and Earth. The Sabbath is a rehearsal of the Millennial peaceful and blissful reign of the Messiah on earth. The Millennial is the seventh day of God because one day is like one thousand years before Yahweh.

God cannot break his covenant or alter the words that have gone out of His mouth. He is a covenant keeping God. God is not changing His laws, rather changing human beings. After the Messiah ratified the New Covenant by His blood, nothing can be added to it after His resurrection.

9. Can the Messiah change the word of his father?
Read John 10:30, John 1:1-2, John 15:10, John 8:55, John 5:17, John 9:4, Psalms 74:12, John 7:16, John 8:25-26, 28-29, 37-38, Matthew 5:17,

Comment
The Messiah clearly states in John chapter 10 verse 30 “I and My Father are one.” The first thing to note here is the Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah and the Father (Yahweh) are two different personalities but are the same in essence and nature. The Messiah, who is the Word, has been with the Father (Yahweh) from the beginning, John 1:1-2. They have the same mind and goals. Likewise, in terms of achieving salvation for mankind, they have the same purpose. The work of salvation the father is doing on earth is the same work the son is doing, John 5:17, John 9:4, Psalms 74:12.

The Messiah kept the commandments of His Father, John 15:10. The Messiah does not speak of his own authority, He speaks as His Father commands Him, John 12:49-50, John 14:9-11. The Messiah states in John 5:30 “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge…” All the teachings (doctrines) of the Messiah are not his own, but His Father’s, and He only speaks of those things His Father asked Him to speak, John 7:16, John 8:25-26, 28-29, 37-38. Hence it is not possible for the Messiah to change the laws and commandments of His father on His own. No wonder he declared in Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” So, if the Messiah and the Father are one in mind, in thought, goal, essence, and nature, and if the Messiah takes instructions from Him, it is not possible for the Messiah to do something contrary against His father’s will. They are one because they are in agreement in all things they do.

10. Do true believers keep the commandments of God?
Read Revelation 12:17, Revelation 22:14, Exodus 20:5, John 14:15, 21, Matthew 28:20, Deuteronomy 7:9, John 10:27

Comment
True believers are those who keep the commandments of God, including the Sabbath command. They observe what the Messiah commanded, not what they think he commanded. The love of believers for God and the Messiah is shown by keeping the commandments of God.

Conclusion
God made the Sabbath in Genesis, and it became a written law in Exodus. The Messiah then came to magnify and explain it real intention. He demonstrated to the religious leaders that the Sabbath is a day of delight, blessing, and freedom, and not a day of burden or bondage. The Sabbath was kept by the Messiah, His Apostles, and the Gentiles Christians. The Messiah still expects his followers to keep it until his second coming. And beginning from the millennial reign of the Messiah to the new heaven and earth, the Sabbath will be kept.

God is not an author of confusion who will tell his children to do something today, then tomorrow tells them another thing, and then the day after another instruction on the same issue. He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change, and neither will alter the words that came out his mouth. God is an all-knowing God; he does not make mistakes. The Sabbath command is for all humanity (Jews and Gentiles) to be kept forever.
Hebrews 4 verses 10-11 states, “There remains, therefore, a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us, therefore, be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.”
